 Live=20 Discussion: Participate!

Is freedom of the press a = pre-requisite for=20 democracy?

Many developing nations struggling for democracy and good = governance do not support freedom of the press. For = instance, while=20 democratic elections are being held in countries such as = Pakistan,=20 Nigeria and Russia, the media in these countries is often = restricted=20 or controlled by government censorship, begging the = question: How=20 democratic are they really?

Does free media equal good governance? Can an "honest" = election=20 occur without press freedom? Do the media play a role in = good=20 governance?

IJNet would like to hear your opinion. Join the discussion = by clicking=20 on "Add a Comment". Please identify your = country if=20 possible. Thanks for your participation!=20

Points to Ponder

Religious icons in the media: Where = to draw=20 the line?

"Re-printing of the sacrilegious cartoons hurting Muslim=20 sentiments is surely something which should be denounced as = the act=20 doesn't justify the "freedom of press" slogan of the=20 West.

The reason is that Muslims have already vented = their=20 anger when the cartoons were published for the first time in = Denmark. It means Danish media now has a fair idea that = publishing=20 of such cartoons hurts religious sentiments of Muslims. = Re-printing=20 of those cartoons for the third time should have been = avoided as=20 there is no justification of re-printing the blasphemous=20 caricatures.

I believe Danish media has now been = deliberately=20 trying to create an uproar all over the world this time. = Religious=20 extremism and terrorism is surely a fact and condemnable. = But is it=20 necessary to involve the holiest personality of Islam to = express=20 hatred for terrorism?

It is time that Europe should = realize=20 that if there should be freedom of press and expression then = European press should also follow journalistic ethics."
