Saudi Arabia bans influential newspaper
Big News Network.com Wednesday 29th August, 2007
| Saudi Arabia has indefinitely banned the distribution of a leading Arab newspaper, Al Hayat. It is still unclear why the ban came about, but it is believed an article on Monday may have precipitated the move. The article related to a Saudi extremist being a front-man for a violent Al-Qaeda group in Iraq. Influential journalists in Saudi Arabia have criticised the move, calling it a sharp retreat from recent growing press freedoms. It was unclear if the Iraqi article was the main impetus for the ban, or merely the end of several weeks of disputes between the newspaper and the kingdom's Information Minister. Al Hayat had recently received several warnings from the country's Information Ministry about its articles criticising government inefficiency and red tape. |
