Competition for the environmental Journalists

Announcement:

  • 1. The United Nations Environment Programme UNEP Division of Technology Industry and Economics (DTIE), OzonAction Programme in cooperation with UNEP Division of communication and Public Information (DCPI) and UNEP Regional offices are pleased to announce a competition for the environmental journalists working in print media.

•2.            The competition is open for entry in the form of published news stories and articles in newspapers, journals and periodicals authored by young journalists (based and born in developing countries) during the period from 1st September 2008 to 31 December 2009.

  • 3. Seven regional awards will be given from among the entries received. Original entries can be submitted in any language jointly with a full translation into English. Regional awards will be given from among the entries from the following regions:

 

  • Africa
  • Eastern Europe and Central Asia
  • Latin America and Caribbean
  • Pacific Island countries
  • South Asia
  • South East Asia Pacific
  • West Asia

 

  • 4. The topics of the entries must be previously-published articles that address one or more of the following subjects:

 

  • 5. Interlink age between the stratospheric ozone layer protection and climate change issues in context of science, impacts, alternative technologies and policies.

 

  • Any aspect of the implementation of the Montreal Protocolglobally, regionally or at national level, e.g. challengesand successes of industry, government and civil society ineliminating ozone depletingsubstances.

 

  • Lessons from the Montreal Protocol for the global community for the road leading to Copenhagen climate negotiations in December 2009.

 

  • The business and economic implications and opportunitiesarising from the adoption ofnew non-ozone depleting technologies.

 

  • 6. The entries will be judged by a Jury in each of the above mentioned regions. Each Jury will consist of well-known experts with expertise in the subject area as well as in media and communications. The Jury's decision will be final and non-contestable.

 

The awards will be announced in early 2010 and published on UNEP DTIE's OzonAction website. 

    

      7.   Eligibility

 

  • The entry should be in the form of original published articles i.e. news story, series of articles or occasional series that break new ground in communication, illuminates a significant and complex environmental subject, demonstrating mastery of the subject, lucid writing and clear presentation. The story or stories must be published in a newspaper, newsletter, journal, magazine, wire service, or other print medium. Only four parts of a longer series may be entered. Related stories published on the same day count as one part.

 

  • The entries with original printed articles must be accompanied by:

               

  • o List of reference material used, if any.
  • o Brief biography of author (maximum length of 200 words).
  • o One copy of completed entry form and the story. A signed statement indicating the author and publisher of the original article agrees that UNEP can post the article on its website and may reproduce the article as part of this contest.

 

  • 8. Candidates can send more than one entry on separate entry forms. (Entry form is attached).

 

  • 9. Applications can only be made on e-mail or by post so as to reach the UNEP offices

            (details in ANNEX) before 31st December 2009. Late entries will not be considered for    

            the competition. 

 

  • 10. The Jury may choose not to award a prize if applications do not meet the minimum standards defined by the Jury for its selection.

 

  • 11. UNEP will reserve the right to publish all or any of the non-winning stories on the UNEP website or in its publications. Due credit will be given by UNEP to the publisher and author of the original story.

 

     12.  The first award for each region would involve fellowship in the form of supporting travel  

            and stay to other countries in the region to write a story on the subject related to Ozone 

            layer protection and its linkage with climate change .The travel and daily subsistence 

            allowance will be paid as per contract.
